The Benefits Of Knitting
You know, one of the most wonderful things I’ve heard lately is that knitting isn’t like skydiving. There’s very little that you can do when you’re knitting that you can’t take back or even accept as a flaw and move on. Skydiving, on the other hand, has some very grave consequences for mistakes. For those of you who skydive (or those who’ve watched it on TV), you know that every move is critical. That’s why you practice so much. Knitting has some critical moves, too. Fortunately, each mistake you make is an opportunity to learn a new skill and to learn something new about yourself.

We all make mistakes – every day we make a new one. Some are big, others not so noticeable. One of the reasons I hear so often for people abandoning knitting or never taking it up is that they don’t want to make a mistake. Sometimes it is the making of a mistake that they fear, and other times it is the consequences of having to fix it. Others feel like they could never let anyone see something that is less than perfect. Let me tell you a secret about knitting. It’s a human activity. It’s really ok if it looks like a human made it. Just about everything that’s been knitted has a mistake. Trust me. Even those expensive sweaters in the stores have mistakes. Chances are, you never noticed them. That’s because knitted items have a wonderful way of looking beautiful, despite the flaws. Just like us.
Mistakes are a way for knitters to learn a new skill. If you make a mistake, you get to see what that looks like so you can avoid it in the future. If you like the way it looks, you can incorporate it in a pattern and create a design element – making the piece uniquely yours. Plus, you get to knit more! I am a believer in the process of knitting more than the product you create. The time we spend knitting is a great time for us to connect with our Creator. The more time you have to do that, the better!
So here’s another great thing about knitting. It really helps you achieve self-acceptance. Self-acceptance is one of those things that people who are high achievers often struggle with. I know that I do. I am always looking to make myself better or to change some aspect of me that doesn’t seem to be quite “right.” I really seek other people’s acceptance of who I am. I know many of my friends who feel the same way. Of course, they don’t knit – yet!
If you don’t accept yourself, you believe that for whatever reason, who you are isn’t good enough. Or maybe some part of you doesn’t fit with your image of the ideal. That way of thinking is preventing you from achieving the “best you” that you are striving to become. It’s kind of ironic that our efforts to improve ourselves often prevent us from being our best. Simply put, every part of you is essential to make you who you are and to prepare you to be the best you can be. Even (and perhaps especially) the parts you’re not so fond of.
So why knit? First, we knit because it is relaxing. Once you get over the learning part, knitting is a rhythmic, natural motion. It is almost meditative in nature. Second, we knit because you get to make something for yourself or someone else. Third, we knit to be able to find some quiet time for ourselves where we can let our mind rest and seek the answers to those nagging questions. Finally, we knit because it helps us accept ourselves. If you can accept that you’ve knit something that has a mistake and still looks good, then you are on the path to accepting yourself – warts and all!

Backyard BeeKeeping
This is my second year as an amateur beekeeper, and this last weekend we split our first hive, creating a second colony which will be relocated to a new home in the suburbs. In nature, bees will swarm to start a new hive. Half the colony wakes up one morning and decides it’s too crowded, they’ve had it with the place, and they pick up their stuff and split. For the beekeeper, this isn’t considered a good thing. Most of the work in beekeeping revolves around keeping swarms from happening. So when you want to make two hives from a single parent, you do it artificially.
For Total Bee Keeping, Click Here.
The process involves removing one of the 3 hive bodies that doesn’t contain the queen, moving it to its new home, and then introducing a new queen. Finding a queen in a hive is not at all like finding a needle in a haystack. It’s like finding a slightly elongated needle in a boiling rage of 20,000 pissed-off, flying venom needles that hate you. I’m partially kidding when I say this. Until you get accustomed to it, this is exactly the perception. The reality is that, assuming you don’t panic and freak them out, there’s usually only a couple angry bees that you’ll deal with when you open the hive up. Everyone else is just going about their business or gorging on honey (the bee’s natural reflex to smelling smoke).
If you can live with the occasional sting while working the hive, the average backyard makes a really nice place for a beehive. From the bees’ perspective, there’s a huge source of pollen and nectar within a 3-mile radius of most homes: vegetable and flower gardens, fruit trees, and even common weeds like dandelions and clover. For the beekeeper, the honey from an urban beehive tastes delicious, with all the complexities of flavor that are missing in single-source honey that you buy at the store. Aside from growing a vegetable garden (tomatoes: also awesome), it’s one of the few agricultural hobbies that you can enjoy from your backyard.
If you’re interested in beekeeping, you should check with your local university’s agriculture department and see if they provide any classes, groups, or resources for amateur beekeepers. As with anything else, a guru is invaluable. Find and befriend one.
You’ll also want to check to see what the local ordinances and licensing rules are regarding bee husbandry. Most importantly you should talk with your neighbors and make sure no one has a bee allergy or is particularly opposed to having the occasional bee pollinating their yard. Usually, you’ll find that people are fascinated about the whole concept, and excited about the promise of a big jar of honey in the fall.

What Is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition of the hand and wrist. It is caused by the median nerve, which runs from the forearm into the hand, being pressed or squeezed at the wrist.
Need To Know More About Carpel Tunnel, Click Here.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a common condition. It is thought to affect about 4 out of every 100 people in the United States and cost several billion dollars per year in time lost from work and in medical costs.
What Causes It?
The carpal tunnel is a narrow space in your wrist. It has a ceiling, floor, walls, an entrance, and exit. The “walls” and “floor” are made up of bones. The carpal ligament is the tough “ceiling” of the carpal tunnel.
Running from the forearm to the hand and through the carpal tunnel is the median nerve, which controls some of your hand muscles and allows you to feel sensations with your hand. Several tendons also pass through the carpal tunnel.
In a normal wrist, there is adequate room in the carpal tunnel for both the tendons and the median nerve. But the carpal tunnel and the space allowed for the median nerve and tendons cannot get bigger, because the bones and ligaments that form the tunnel will not stretch. Therefore, anything that adds to this space will compress the tendons and median nerve.
As the median nerve is squeezed, less blood and nutrients flow to it. Without these essential nutrients, it becomes damaged and is unable to function normally. This results in carpal tunnel syndrome.
Carpal tunnel syndrome is often caused by a combination of factors that increase pressure on the median nerve and tendons in the carpal tunnel, rather than a problem with the nerve itself.
